Mary Patterson was serving as the chief of staff for an upstream oil and gas company when she got a call about an opportunity with B&W. With decades of experience working in human resources, she knew how to serve people well. After meeting with B&W’s founders for an hour and a half, she could tell that B&W valued its people just as much as she did.
For nearly nine years, Mary has helped strengthen B&W’s people operations as director of human resources. Her role is so much more than payroll and benefits—she creates systems that promote B&W’s culture of mentorship while making employees’ and managers’ lives easier. By streamlining processes and clearing away administrative clutter, Mary gives leaders more time to develop and invest in their teams.
One standout project during her time with B&W has been leading the implementation of a digital learning and development system for B&W’s technical advisors. Mary saw an opportunity to introduce a more efficient, accessible system and guided the rollout of a centralized platform that houses training materials, automates reminders and provides a real-time look into employee development.
Besides helping employees succeed and feeling empowered to try new approaches she believes will move the company forward, Mary’s favorite aspect of working at B&W is witnessing how dedicated her fellow team members are, not only toward B&W’s clients, but to each other.
“They take pride in what they do, truly. They’re accountable toward each other, and they don’t want to let each other down. It’s almost like, ‘I’m not going to let my brother down.’ I’ve never seen this level of commitment to each other in a company before. It’s beautiful to see.”
Outside of work, Mary loves spending time with her family and friends and traveling to new places (Italy is her favorite destination she’s visited so far). We’re so grateful to have you and your insights on our team, Mary!
