In 2016, B&W Energy Services partnered with Technip and Shell to deliver engineering and steam blowing services for their 600,000-tonne Prelude FLNG facility before being towed from Geoje, South Korea, to its permanent mooring location 155 nautical miles off the coast of Australia.
The project is the largest of its kind in the world and was Shell’s first venture into Floating LNG technology. Its primary purpose is to discover new energy resources offshore that would have gone unreached before its construction. In 2019, it reached a significant milestone as it shipped its first liquefied natural gas cargo to Asia.
Prelude FLNG contains a large, complex steam piping network spanning the 488-meter, or 1,601-foot, vessel. The steam blow program was a unique project for B&W, which required careful planning and execution due to limited space aboard the vessel and strict noise restrictions. The program was a success, and B&W is grateful to have partnered with both Technip and Shell to deliver world-class engineering and field services for the Prelude FLNG facility.
