After reviewing the requirements and services needed by customers, B&W’s talented Engineering Team will develop a full set of Hydrotesting (Hydrostatic) procedures to identify pressure boundaries, temperature requirements, isolation notes, and in some cases, equipment removal on projects.
Let’s take an in-depth look at the reasons Hydrotesting is a requirement. This service is used to test for leakages in boiler pressure parts such as tubes, headers and pipes, as well as testing the soundness of welded joints and associated pressure parts to ensure compliance with code requirements. Additionally, Hydrotesting works to prove the strength of pressure parts at a pressure greater than the working pressure of the boiler at ambient temperature. Although hydrostatic testing is a nondestructive testing method, it is possible for equipment to rupture and fail if inspection exceeds a specified test pressure, or if a small crack develops rapidly.
The test involves filling the vessel or system with a liquid, usually water, which may be dyed to aid in visual leak detection, and pressurization to the specified test pressure. Pressure tightness can be tested by shutting off the supply valve and observing and recording whether there is a pressure loss. The location of a leak can be visually identified more easily if the water contains a colorant.
When the proper test pressure is developed, inspection in accordance with codes may begin. The system should be examined for any leaks, and if none are visible, the system is held in a pressurized static condition until the code requirement is satisfied. If a city inspector is required, B&W Energy Services will work alongside the examiner to ensure compliance.
In order to provide comprehensive pre-commissioning services to customers, B&W performs Hydrotesting services to verify the integrity of piping systems, vessels, boilers and HRSGs. A hydrostatic test is performed to ensure the structural integrity of the vessel or piping system is secure for testing and operation.
By using a single source, B&W can design an integrated Hydrotesting and cleaning program that ensures these construction activities only happen once, which eliminates many wasted man-hours and unnecessary costs. These tests must be performed by qualified and trained personnel to avoid safety and environmental incidents. B&W employs highly trained and qualified personnel to ensure Hydrotests are performed safely and effectively. In addition, our Hydrotests are accompanied by comprehensive engineering procedures to ensure all safety protocols are followed and the correct equipment is provided to execute the work.
